The numerics group is engaged in the development and application of methods for the numerical solution of the basic fluid flow equations. Among the core research topics are finite volume methods for flows in complex geometries, fluid-structure-interaction problems, implementation and validation of turbulence models, large eddy simulations, multiphase flows and flows with phase transitions. The developed numerical methods are applied to the investigation of basic physical phenomena as well as to the solution of real-world problems, where the combination of simulations and experiments allows for significant reduction in both development time and cost. Using the high performance computing capabilities of the local computing center (RRZE), the simulation of
complex flows comes within reach, giving the possibility to obtain a holistic image of the flow under consideration, that could not be achieved using measurements alone.

Der jährliche europäische Kunststoffverbrauch lag 2016 bei 50 Mio. Tonnen (40 % Verpackungen). Um einen schonenden Umgang mit unseren natürlichen Ressourcen zu gewährleisten, besteht ein vielversprechender Ansatz in der Minimierung des notwendigen Materialeinsatzes bei gleichbleibender Funktionalität. Ein weit verbreitetes, kostengünstiges Herstellungsverfahren von dreidimensionalen Kunststoffformkörpern aus planen Halbzeug ist das Thermoformen. Es dient der Fertigung von technischen Bauteilen sowie Verpackungen. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund des hohen Ressourcenbedarfs für Verpackungen (70 % des weltweiten Kunststoffverbrauchs), besteht aus ökonomischen und ökologischen Aspekten ein stetiger Bedarf nach materialsparenden Technologien und Verfahren.
