With great pleasure, we announce that Professor Philipp Schlatter is the new head of the Institute of Fluid Mechanics (LSTM) at Friedrich Alexander University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuremberg as of April 1, 2023. Professor Schlatter is a renowned expert in the field of fluid mechanics. We are delighted to welcome him as the new head of our institute.

Professor Schlatter’s academic qualifications include a degree in mechanical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) in 2001 and a subsequent PhD in fluid mechanics from ETH Zurich in 2005, after which Professor Schlatter worked as a PhD researcher at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and was appointed as full professor of Fluid Mechanics in 2019. Prof. Schlatter’s research includes high-resolution simulations of turbulent flows and transitional flows. Especially configurations in proximity to solid walls are of importance. Furthermore, aspects of high-performance computing, spectral element methods, data analysis and decompositions, optimization, and novel numerical algorithms play an essential role in his research. In addition, he is also known for his close interaction with experimentalists to cross-validate simulation and experimental data. Prof. Schlatter was the former director of the Linné FLOW Centre at KTH Stockholm and led the fluid dynamics community of the Swedish e-Science research center.

We are confident that Professor Schlatter’s extensive experience and expertise will enrich the research program at LSTM and FAU. We are honored to welcome him to our institute and look forward to the great work he will do at LSTM.
